50% of the current green space you see here, could soon be concrete.

Musgrave Park is an incredible piece of our community - rich with significance. It is used by many people from across Brisbane for sport, recreation and relaxation. It contributes to the health and wellbeing of thousands plus its a place where athletes become state, national and world champions.

But the West End Pool is now threatened by 2500 square metres of concrete. Brisbane State High wants to take away 27% of the existing swimming pool site for a tennis complex.

This will form part of approximately 5000 sqm combined tennis and basketball development, cut into the existing green bank between State High and the pool complex less than 20 metres from the existing swimming pool.

It will dramatically reduce our green public space, where we get away from the hustle and the bustle, sit and have a laugh, catch up with friends, our athletes warm up, our kids have fun , we exercise, multiple groups of polo players and swimmers gather during competitions.

It will restrict any future community driven development to enhance the existing facility for all user groups.

We will be caged in by high fences, less shade, more heat and more noise that will drastically affect our existing retreat.

Change is inevitable, and if properly planned it can create incredible opportunity. But change without consulting our community is not the way it should be done.

Remember we are paying for it, so lets enhance our community assets and plan for something that we will all benefit from.

As the community of South Brisbane and West End we can advocate a better proposal and you have until Friday, 28th September 2007 to comment on the current development application.

ARGUMENTS FOR NOT CONSTRUCTING TENNIS COURTS ON THE SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX:

1. State Government and Council have no known long-term plan of what to do with the Musgrave Park Swimming Complex.

2. We need to reduce the environmental imprint on our land, allowing more trees to grow and more water to be captured.

3. We should protect remaining green,open, safe places, improving those stress-free spots in our community and enhancing one of the few places to enjoy swimming.

4. 2415sqm of fenced concrete will spoil the natural ecology of the land and its preserved heritage.

5. There is an alternative. That does not impede into West End swimming pool's surroundings. All tennis courts and basket ball courts can be built on a 45m x 45m grid only, cantilevered over State High Land and accessible from both sides. This reduces environmental imprint to some 45% of planned courts, adding an additional basketball court and producing 2 of “covered” tennis courts and 2 of covered basket ball courts.

6. Any buildings should meet standards set by the Green Building Council - concrete, fencing and posts from the old tennis courts should be re-used.

The proposed tennis complex negates the possibility of renovating the site into a fantastic new complex like the one in the drawing here, described below.

This concept is not in concrete, and will allow the community to think about the big picture and understand the importance of integrated design and holistic planning.

When planned well we can cater for all existing users and many more.

We can reuse a majority of the existing facility thus reducing environmental impact through green star ratings, and offering a city wide example of doing better. An enhanced community facility will not only attract the best coaches and athletes, but will have a positive impact on the future of the increasing community overall.

Our community and users will be able to train in a outdoor facility away from the hustle and the bustle all year round.

State High can still have its tennis and basket courts. This designer's concept shows how better use of space can be achieved, resulting in the schools desired facilities without compromising the swimming complex.

4. View and sign our petition on Saturday 22nd September 2007 from 8am at the corner of Boundary and Vulture Streets, West End. There will also be a stall at the West End markets.
